Acknowledging this, the Upjohn Institute conducts research intended to improve educational policy and practice. Upjohn research has examined the effects of out-of-school time tutoring, summer reading, and extended time for math and reading during the school day. Earlier research investigated the educational impact of charter schools compared to traditional public schools and the effects of teacher unions and “merit pay” incentives for teachers on student performance.
