In a piece for the Washington Post, Jared Bernstein and Somin Park detailed new research from the Upjohn Institute's Timothy J. Bartik on how federal, state and local policies can help manufacturing-intensive communities. "Helping U.S. manufacturers: What works?" looks at strategies of 22 communities that saw strong manufacturing job growth even as their peers fell behind.
The Upjohn Institute published Bartik's research in a short report and longer technical paper.
The same piece also references Susan N. Houseman's research debunking myths surrounding automation in manufacturing. Houseman's paper is "Understanding the Decline of U.S. Manufacturing Employment."
